Denham (A) 19th April 2009
The Javs returned to the scene of one of their greatest triumphs (chasing down 274, 2 years ago), hoping for inspiration and a win to start the season.
A visit to County Hall, the home of Rob Mitchell and brutal cricketers. Seeking their first win of the season, the Javs were heartened by memories of the corresponding fixture last year.
Again, County Hall chose to bat. Again, Mitchell made a start, but fell short of a significant total. Finally, again, County Hall's skipper bludgeoned his way to a ton, underpinning the home side's fine batting effort as they reached 254 off their 40 overs.
The only other item of note was John Finch's fielding. Of all the fielding displays by any cricketer in a Javs match, this stood out as the worst. Finch was to follow this up with a first ball duck to complete his triumphal day.
As with last year, the Javs took to the run chase with gusto. 50s from Morton and Murphy and 49 from Charlie Yolland were the highlights, but the total proved just out of reach.
Javs Man of the match: Morton.
The first win still awaits.
