The Javs returned to the scene of one of their greatest triumphs (chasing down 274, 2 years ago), hoping for inspiration and a win to start the season.
Optimism was high- the team had netted well during the off-season, the weather was clement and Robin had a clean pair of underpants (his own). To counter this, 2 players had called off on the morning of the match- Lewis in favour of a drinking session and Big Dave, taking a stricken footballer to hospital. Also, John Finch broke convoy on the way to Denham, resulting in chaos on the short journey. No clear omens then.
Murphy lost the toss and the Javs were put in. The pitch had looked flat and sun-baked, but moisture underneath led to a slow, low wicket, conducive to neither batting nor bowling. With the notable exception of Murphy, all batsmen struggled; only Leybourne offered any real support to the burly skipper in a stand which promised much but ended in anti-climax with a woeful shot from the Ex Director of Communications. 134 all out.
Ian Birchley nearly missed the team photo, feasting on his 3rd helping of tea, but the interval was otherwise uneventful.
Yolland C and Edrich struggled to make inroads with their opening spells, littered with wides and full-bungers and a routine victory looked on the cards for Denham. However, Leybourne cast his spell on the home side, taking 3 quick wickets to put the result in doubt with the home side at 50 for 4.
Although no further wickets were to fall, it is a tribute to the Javs bowling, and an indication of pitch conditions, that the winning runs were not hit until the 38th over. The fielding was generally awful with no exceptions.
